Day 4
of the Canadian Swimming Trials is in full swing with the prelims and time
trials in the books. With the swimmers preparing for finals away from the pool
this afternoon all eyes will be on the men’s 100 free and women’s 200 fly.
After
a disappointing 100 fly a few days ago, last night in the 200 free Katerine
Savard turned her game around and made the women’s 4 x 200 free relay team for
Rio. After her race it was clear she was excited and likely relived she made
the grade. Tonight Savard will have a chance to make an individual event, the
200 fly. She is seeded 2nd in tonight’s finals with a time of
2:13.10 how ever she will be up against butterfly legend Audrey Lacroix who had
a solid swim of 2:11.07 in the prelims. Both women will be racing for the FINA
A standard time of 2:09.33 which is do able for both as their lifetime bests
are faster then the standard.
The second
event to watch closely tonight is the men’s 100 free, not only for gold and
silver, assuming they will be under the FINA A cut, but bronze and 4th
for the men’s 4 x 100 free relay in Rio. The top 10 Canadian men were fast in
the morning with Santo Condorelli swimming an impressive morning swim time of
48:09 being the fastest qualifier for tonight’s final. It will definitely take a
sub 49 to make the podium tonight and likely sub 49.3 for the relay team. Watch
for this to be a close race tonight.
In the
women’s 200 IM Sydney Pickrem put up the fastest time in the heats and will
look to add another gold medal to her week of swimming here at the Olympic
Trials. Pickrem has already made the 400 IM and will look to make the 200 IM
and even chase down her own Canadian record time of 2:10.08 which is totally do
able.
The final
event of the morning was the women’s 800 free. And by surprise I had forgotten
from 4 years ago this event is prelim and final at the Olympic Trials. Etobicoke
Swim Club, known for many standout swimmers went 1-2 in the prelims with Olivia
Anderson swimming a near best time of 8:41.75 and teammate Brittany Maclean,
winner of the 200 and 400 free in the Trials already swam a conservative
8:42.64 look for a much faster swim from Maclean tomorrow night. The distance
swimmers get the day off to recover from the longer race which helps with
recovery.
Here
are the top 10 Canadian finishers this morning, predictions for event winner,
note 4 bolded names for the men’s 100 free as this will be a relay selection
event, and of course the all important FINA A cut time.
