Day 3 trials prelims is in the books and once again another
strong morning of swims, setting up for an excellent final ahead. Today, Canada
will learn the 4 members of the women’s 4 x 200 free relay as the individual 200
free is being swum this evening. Another exciting swimmer will be Canada’s
best, and my second freestyle idol Ryan Cochrane as he competes in the 400
free. Fingers crossed we name more men to the Olympic Team tonight in the 400
free and 200 breast after a slow start to the nominations this week.
The low numbers of men making the extremely difficult FINA A
standard are raising the question “Are these FINA A standards to difficult to
make at this time of the year?” It is without question these are difficult
standards and I do believe the standards are on the difficult side. The men are
not swimming slow at all. In fact, they are swimming better then ever with many
youngsters stepping up and setting Canadian Age Group Records. The seniors are
struggling though and likely a refocus or struggle of the standards needs to be
made going forward. It is, however, excellent having younger swimmers qualifying
for the Olympics, but a good team needs depth and experience of swimmers young
and old.
Here is a peak at the top 10 results from the morning,
winner predictions for finals, and FINA A cuts for all the events. Note for the
women’s 200 free I will have 4 swimmers highlighted as this event will send 4
swimmers.

FINALS
Day 3 of the 2016 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials are well
underway, and tonight more records were broken, more medals were won, and more
swimmers were nominated to the Olympic Team.
The evening started off with a nail biting 200 free with the
top 4 girls have a close race. In the end it was Brittany Maclean picking up
her second Gold medal and Canadian Record of the trials. On the men’s side, 2
more names were added to the nomination list, with Ryan Cochrane tearing things
up in the 400 free and a surprise twist in the 200 breast with Ashton
Baumann picking up the win. This was a surprise as he was seeded 4th
going into the finals. A bit of an upset for sure with Richard Funk
not qualifying for the games. Funk was clearly disappointed as he stepped onto
the podium tonight as he also did not make the difficult standard in the 100
breast earlier in the competition.
